Kimberly Joy Borrego was born in a small town in Walsenburg, Colorado on December 18th, 1975. Kim’s childhood wasn’t a life full of glitz and glamour rather one of a country girl experiencing the best that a city and country farm life had to offer.

Only a week after her High School graduation Kim was married to her freshman sweetheart. Life was good and a year and a half later they were blessed with a son, Kim was now taking on the reigns of motherhood. Her marriage abruptly came to an end shortly after their child was born. Now Kim was a single mother looking to make ends meet.

Kim was in another relationship and upon her acceptance to USC as a team member of the Volleyball team Kim was delivered her next shocking piece of news, she was pregnant again with a little girl. The news of a second child put her hopes of graduating college to the side as she had to provide for her two children.

Kim put her academic skills to the test and pasted the training to become a Sherriff. At the age of 21 Kim had became an officer of the law. Two years on the force Kim was taking her first vacation to visit family in Las Vegas, NV. While on the trip Kim met in passing the top execs of Mandalay Bay (which at this time was under construction). She was later offered a position at the resort for double her Sheriff pay. For a mom supporting two children it was in her best interest to accept and make the move to Las Vegas.

Kim quickly rose to the top at Mandalay Bay in just over a year’s time there. The word spread and the competition was eager to entice Kim away to bigger and better things. Kim was offered a job as a cocktail manager at Bellagio where she spent the next year and a half there, again making a name for herself. This is where she met Steve Wynn and he suggested with her personality she should be in casino marketing. Kim jumped at the opportunity and after only 3 months of her new job responsibility she was promoted to executive casino host. Kim was later an integral part to the success of opening Steve Wynn’s multi-billion dollar casino “Wynn”.

Now as a casino host Kim was no stranger to the glitz and glamour of celebrity parties, nightlife and the numerous sporting events that Las Vegas is know for. When Kim wasn’t at work or taking care of her kids, Kim loved to workout and train.

In 2004 she started to train at J-Sect, a Jiu-Jitsu training center, just as a hobby to keep in shape and break the grind of going to the typical treadmill farms found around the city. While she was training at J-Sect she became friends with many of the local MMA fighters like Jay Hieron and Mike Pyle to name a few.

In 2005 she met Randy Couture through John Lewis, a former fighter for the UFC who owned J-Sect in Las Vegas.

Lewis threw a party for the folks involved on The Ultimate Fighter show and invited Kim. It was at that party that she met Randy. They talked throughout the night and eventually had lunch together and the rest is history. They married in October 2006.

Soon after the union Randy and Kim opened Xtreme Couture MMA training center. This was the first complete MMA gym where it met the needs of top MMA professionals in every discipline.
It was in this gym that Kim in 2007, age 31 and a mother of two, decided that she wanted to test the waters of MMA competition. She had followed the career of Gina Carano and knew that the sport needed another icon to propel women’s MMA fighting to mainstream media and the fans . Kim has a deep love for the sport and it just all seemed to fit.

On Feb 29th 2008 HDNet Fights aired the debut of Kim Couture. This was a Muay Thai exhibition event vs. Allison Clarkson held at Xtreme Couture MMA.

A few months later Kim was ready and prepared for her official amateur MMA debut vs. Jessica Cruz which took place on April 5, 2008. Kim’s hands were held high after the event with her first win.
Two months later Kim felt it was time to make her pro MMA debut on June 20th 2008 vs. Kim Rose. The battle raged for 3 five minute rounds with Kim breaking her jaw in the first few seconds of the fight. Kim, bleeding profusely throughout the fight, was questions by many in the media whether women’s MMA should be allowed.

Although Kim suffered her first MMA competition defeat in the ring she vowed to come back stronger and better and prove the critics wrong.

After a very short healing period she was back in the gym training. She was offered her next fight with Strikeforce debuting on November 21st, 2008 against Lina Kvokov. One minute, 44 seconds into the fight after Lina ate leather the entire fight, Kim Couture was awarded her first professional MMA fight victory.

Kim continues to train daily, push women’s MMA movement along with co-managing the many business that she and Randy have co-founded.

Kimberly Marie Glass (born August 18, 1984) is an American indoor volleyball player. She is 6'3" (191cm) and plays as an outside hitter. She currently plays for Modřanská Prostějov. Schäfer had a fairly successful Junior career. She was the alternate on the Swiss team (skipped by Silvana Tirinzoni) that won the 1999 World Junior Championships, but she did not play any games. Schäfer skipped the Swiss team at the 2000 and 2001 World Juniors, finishing fourth and winning the bronze medal respectively. In 2000, She lost to the U.S. team (skipped by Laura Delaney) in the bronze medal game, 8-5. She had to beat Moe Meguro's Japanese team to capture the bronze in 2001, winning the game 5-4.

In 2007, Schäfer joined Ott's team. They finished in fourth place at the 2007 European Curling Championships. They avenged their defeat at the 2008 Ford World Women's Curling Championship when the won the bronze medal, once again she had to beat Japan and their skip, Meguro. The Japanese had beat them in the 3-4 game, but in the bronze medal rematch, had slipped.

The javelin throw is clearly her weakest discipline and has been cited as the main reason for her lack of medals at the 2005 World Championships and 2006 European Championships.

Sotherton trains at the grounds of the athletics club Birchfield Harriers, which is based in Birmingham, England. She was educated at Ryde High School and Brunel University.

At the 2005 World Championships Sotherton had held a medal position going into the sixth event, despite some below average performances, but a disastrous javelin saw her drop out of contention. Sotherton did manage to knock nearly 2.5 seconds off her personal best to win the final 800 m, but despite closing the overall gap on those ahead she only finished fifth.

In February 2008, Sotherton competed in a three-event triathlon, at the Indoor Grand Prix, in Birmingham, against a field including Carolina Klüft.

Sotherton started with a below-par performance in the long jump, allowing Klüft to take the lead. Sotherton then won the 60 m hurdles in a personal best of 8.17 seconds. Despite running a personal best (and the fastest time by a Briton that season) of 52.47 seconds in the 400m, Sotherton took second behind Klüft, who won by 18 points.

After Klüft pulled out of the World Indoor Championships in Valencia, Sotherton became favourite for the gold medal. She lived up to expectation in the 60 m hurdles, winning in 8.25 seconds. However, Sotherton put in a well below-par berformance in the high jump, achieving only 1.81 m, against Tia Hellebaut's 1.99 m., and Sotherton slipped to third and then to fifth after the shot put. Sotherton then won the long jump with 6.45 m, moving into second, behind Hellebaut, who set a Belgian record of 6.41 m. Hellebaut held a considerable lead entering the final event, the 800 m. Sotherton needed to beat the Belgian by 7.7 seconds to win gold. Sotherton set a personal best of 2:09.95, with Hellebaut collapsing over the line in 2:16.42, 6.47 seconds behind Sotherton, and the Briton had to again settle for silver.

After Klüft's retirement from heptathlon in 2008, Sotherton had been tipped by many people to take gold at the 2008 Olympics, including Klüft herself. However after a disappointing performance she could only manage 5th place in the competition. Lyudmila Blonska was later disqualified for failing a doping test and Sotherton was upgraded to fourth. She had previously labelled Blonska a cheat, and questioned the validity of Blonska's silver medal at the World Championships in 2007. She was also part of the 4 × 400 m relay team which finished fifth in the final.

The following year, Sotherton struggled with injuries and although she was selected for the 2009 European Indoor Championships she had to withdraw due to heel problems.[

NEW YORK (AP) — Maria Sharapova was right where she likes to be: on the Grand Slam stage and in the spotlight.

After missing last year's U.S. Open with a shoulder injury, the 2006 champion returned to the tournament Tuesday night with an impressive 6-3, 6-0 victory over Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria.

Sharapova's game was as glittery as her black-and-silver dress and matching headwrap, an outfit she described as a tribute to New York's skyline.

Several hours after Dinara Safina came perilously close to becoming the first No. 1-seeded woman to lose in this major tournament's first round, Sharapova gave a much stronger performance.

The three-time Grand Slam title winner produced 29 winners — a whopping 23 more than her 98th-ranked opponent. And Sharapova's game was particularly clean in the second set, when she hit 16 winners and only five unforced errors.

Apart from four double-faults, Sharapova showed no signs of the shoulder tear that forced her to have surgery in October and kept off the tour for nearly 10 months.

"This is a Grand Slam. You've got to get going from the first match," Sharapova said. "After being gone, this is what it's all about."

In addition to tennis skills and grit that once placed her No. 1 in the rankings, Sharapova always has placed an emphasis on fashion. On this night, her black dress carried bold, metallic accents that would gain her entry into even the trendiest of New York clubs. She paired it with a matching, '60s-style silver headband.

As often happens with Sharapova, the postmatch, on-court interview dealt as much with her getup as her game. "It's always 50-50: You never know when people are going to like it or not," Sharapova told the crowd.

Safina's coach certainly did not appear to like what he saw.

Sitting in the stands at the U.S. Open, he'd cover his eyes with his hands or turn his head with a wince as Safina's 11 double-faults and all manner of other mistakes mounted — or put another way, as she looked less and less like a woman who is ranked No. 1.

There's been some debate this season about whether Safina deserves that standing, one spot ahead of Serena Williams. The Russian did not bolster her case Tuesday.

Nearly undone by her own poor play, Safina was a point away from a 4-0 deficit in the third set before coming back to beat 167th-ranked Olivia Rogowska of Australia 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-4.

Safina, younger sister of 2000 U.S. Open champion Marat Safin, is used to faring well in the early stages of Grand Slam tournaments. Usually, it's later on that problems arise: She is 0-3 in major finals, all lopsided losses, and she managed to win only one game against Venus Williams in the Wimbledon semifinals in July.

On Tuesday, Safina repeatedly glanced up at her coach, Zeljko Krajan, perhaps hoping for positive reinforcement. Instead, she rarely found anything but negative body language.

"Well," Safina would say later, "I guess I had to think: 'What I'm doing wrong?'"

The answer: plenty. And she didn't merely miss, 48 unforced errors in all. She missed rather badly. Embarrassingly, even.

"I was surprised that, you know, she was giving me free points," said Rogowska, an 18-year-old who never has defeated anyone ranked better than 47th.

As Rogowska spoke, her eyes were red, and she fiddled with a well-worn tissue.

"I'm disappointed I lost," she said, "and I didn't expect to say that after playing the No. 1 player in the world. It's a bit weird."

The day did feature the occasional upset: 276th-ranked Jesse Witten of Naples, Fla., knocked off No. 29-seeded Igor Andreev of Russia 6-4, 6-0, 6-2; Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium defeated No. 16 Virginie Razzano of France 6-4, 6-3; and Shahar Peer of Israel eliminated No. 32 Agnes Szavay of Hungary 6-2, 6-2.

Otherwise, winners included 2004 U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, past runners-up Elena Dementieva and Jelena Jankovic, No. 9 Caroline Wozniacki and No. 13 Nadia Petrova.

Men's winners included 2008 Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic and that tournament's runner-up, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, along with No. 10 Fernando Verdasco, No. 11 Fernando Gonzalez, No. 16 Marin Cilic, No. 17 Tomas Berdych and No. 22 Sam Querrey.

Neither Safina nor Rogowska played particularly well. They combined for 24 double-faults, 113 unforced errors and 15 service breaks over 2½ hours.

"I put a lot of pressure on her serve," Rogowska said, "and it seemed to crumble a bit."

Afterward, Safina found two things to be happy about: She didn't break any rackets — something big brother Marat is known for — and she didn't receive any warnings from the chair umpire. So, yes, the mental fragility she's acknowledged is an issue for her on court was a factor in her play, but at least Safina managed to keep it in check.

Oh, and then there was this: "Tomorrow is another day," she said. "So hopefully from today on, it's going to get better."

Couldn't get much worse.

"It happens that you have a bad day and you want to ... say, 'I hate everything,'" Safina said. "But at the end of the day, you win the match, even like this — I would say a little bit ugly. But you come in the hotel, and you are like, 'I made it.' Like, at the end of the day, that counts. I made it. I pulled it out, and that's what counts for me."

Rogowska, too, tried to find the positive in her day. A year ago, after all, she was back home in Melbourne, watching the U.S. Open on television. On Tuesday, she was playing in the tournament and nearly winning — against the woman who is ranked No. 1, no less.

"My heart was just going crazy, and I was breathing, like, really fast," Rogowska said. "So next time, I guess, I'm just going to have to learn to stay calm, and, you know, not get too excited."

Sounds like good advice for Safina.

In 2005, Shaughnessy has struggled with injuries and consistency. Her year began with a right leg injury, which forced her to withdraw from the Australian Open doubles competition, and from a tournament in Hyderabad. However, Shaughnessy showed signs of recovery in February, reaching the final of Memphis, defeating Nicole Vaidišová in the semifinals. The match featured Shaughnessy serving 22 aces in her 7–6 7–6 win. After Memphis, Shaughnessy struggled with back injuries for the duration of the spring, not reaching another semifinal until June at a grass tournament in 's-Hertogenbosch.

By July, Shaughnessy's ranking had dropped so low that she was forced to qualify for the Palo Alto tournament. She successfully qualified, and then stunned number five seed Vera Zvonareva in the first round, before losing to Daniela Hantuchová in the second round. A back injury forced Shaughnessy to withdraw from tournaments in Carlsbad, California and Los Angeles. As a wildcard in New Haven, she defeated number nine seed Nathalie Dechy for the first time in ten attempts, before losing to doubles partner Anna-Lena Grönefeld in the second round. At the US Open, Shaughnessy led sixteen year old Sesil Karatantcheva 6–3 5–2 in the opening round, and held two match points, before losing 3–6 7–5 7–5.

However, on March 24, 2006, Shaughnessy demolished Number 3 seed Justine Henin-Hardenne 7–5, 6–4 in the second round (Henin-Hardenne's 1st round) of the Nasdaq 100 Tournament in Miami. Shaughnessy then won a WTA-level event in Rabat, beating 8th seeded Martina Suchá in three sets, 6–2, 3–6, 6–3. It was her 4th tour title. She became the first American to win a WTA-level title in 2006 as well as the first to reach a WTA final in 2006. Shaughnessy afterwards reached the second round at Istanbul, beating 3rd seeded Anna Chakvetadze in the first round. Then she fell in the first round in the French Open to top seeded and crowd favorite Amélie Mauresmo, 6–4, 6–4.

The next year, she faced the previous year's runner-up, Svetlana Kuznetsova, in the second round of the French Open. Shaughnessy raced into a 5–0 lead in the first set, and in the sixth game held three set points on Svetlana's serve. Alexei Yurievich Nemov (Russian: Алексей Юрьевич Немов; born 28 May 1976, Barashevo) is a gymnast from Russia and one of the most medaled gymnasts, male or female, of all time. He has won 12 Olympic medals, including more Olympic bronze medals (six) than any other athlete. Nemov's sense of showmanship and his difficult routines have won him many fans. He currently lives in his hometown of Tolyatti with his wife Galina, and his son Alexei.

Alexei Nemov grew up in Tolyatti on the Volga River. His father left him and his mother when Nemov was just a baby, and Nemov has never seen him since. Alexei started gymnastics at age five.

As a 16-year-old he made his debut at the 1993 World Championships, placing fifth on floor. The following year, he stamped himself as a true all-around contender, winning his qualifying session at the Worlds. He later faltered and dropped to 12th overall. He won his first major all-around title at the Goodwill Games in Saint Petersburg, beating his 2nd-place teammate and World Silver Medalist Aleksei Voropaev by over one point. Nemov's style of gymnastics was considered very well-rounded; he had complex acrobatics, a unique style, and elegance when he performed.

Despite promising initial international success, in 1995 he gained a reputation for having inconsistent performances. In the all-around at the 1995 European Cup, Nemov, then 19, was the leader after five events and had put up the high score on three events. When he came to high bar, he only needed an 8.75 to win the title. He missed his two major release moves, crashed into the bar on another release move, botched a required element, and stopped in the middle of his routine. He scored a 7.35 and dropped to ninth overall.

A few months later, Nemov competed in the World Championships in Sabae, Japan. The Russian team had a disastrous showing during the qualifying round--finishing in 11th place. Nemov was in 96th all-around. The team rebounded in the finals to finish 4th overall (still a disappointment since it marked the first time in decades that the Russians failed to medal in the team competition), while Nemov put up the highest optional score of all the competitors. His compulsory round ranking prevented him from qualifying to the all-around finals, however.

At the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, Nemov seemed poised to win the gold. Nemov won six medals (two gold, one silver, and three bronze). He performed solidly in the all-around, battling World Champion Li Xiaoshuang every step of the way. He ruined his chances for gold, however, when he botched his middle tumbling run on the final event. He finished in second by a narrow margin.

Nemov's Olympic success and newfound worldwide fame did not last. Over the next several years, he baffled audiences with his uninspired, inconsistent performances in major international competition. He continually battled recurring shoulder injuries, boredom, and poor fitness level. He failed to win a major all-around title for nearly four years, and many doubted his chances for Olympic gold at the Sydney Olympics. He surprised everyone when he arrived at the Olympics doing the best gymnastics of his career, and once again took home six medals. This time, he won the all-around title, finally winning the first major championship of his career.

Although never regaining his form of 2000, Nemov competed through to the 2004 Athens Olympics, mainly as an anchor for the fledgling Russian team. Though unable to defend his all-around title, Nemov's performances brought the house down in Athens, and placed him in the middle of a judging controversy. After performing a routine with six release skills in the high bar finals (including four in a row), the judges posted a score of 9.725, placing him in third with several athletes still to compete. The crowd erupted in a chorus of boos and cheers upon seeing the results and interrupted the competition for nearly 15 minutes. The judges felt the pressure of the crowd, reevaluated the routine, and increased his score to a 9.762, which still placed him out of the medals. The crowd continued their raucous protest, subsiding only after Nemov stepped up to the podium and pleaded with his supporters to quiet down for the sake of the other athletes. This scandal was finally credited as one of the last straws after several judging controversies in the competition, and fueled a massive reconstruction of the scoring system which was implemented in 2006. Nemov rarely criticised the judges or the situation. The Russian Olympic Committee later awarded Nemov $40,000 in recognition of his class and character, and he retired from gymnastics soon after.

Franchitti returns to the IndyCar Series for the 2009 season, driving the #10 Target Honda/Dallara for Target Chip Ganassi Racing.

He also competed in the American Le Mans Series for Andretti Green Racing with his brother Marino and former IndyCar Series teammate Bryan Herta. He won the 2007 BBC Scotland Sports Personality of the Year award.

Franchitti married American actress Ashley Judd in 2001, at Skibo Castle near Dornoch, Scotland. They now reside near Franklin, Tennessee, and have no children.

Though Bathgate-born, his family moved to Whitburn when he was eight years old. He is a former pupil of Stewart's Melville College and he supports Celtic Football Club of Glasgow.

His cousin Paul di Resta is also a racing driver. He races in the DTM tin-top series finishing 2nd in 2008.

Fabio Cannavaro (September 13, 1973, Naples, Italy) is a professional footballer currently playing for Real Madrid. He is captain of the Italian national team, which recently won the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He is generally considered the best central defender in the world today.

As a defender, Fabio Cannavaro is famous for his anticipation, concentration and reading of the game, abilities which allow him to make well-timed interceptions and precise slide-tackles. These characteristics have contributed with other factors, including his fitness and stamina, to the widespread recognition of him being one of the best outright defenders ever, allowing him to join a long line of world-class Italian defenders. Cannavaro, although not particularly tall, has a noteworthy leaping ability that allows him to compete seemingly unhindered in the air, both when defending and attacking.

Cannavaro has played for S.S.C. Napoli (1992-95), Parma F.C. (1995-2002), Internazionale Milano F.C. (2002-04) and Juventus FC (2004-2006) during his career in Serie A, before moving to Real Madrid.

Cannavaro was born in Naples. His talent was quickly spotted by scouts from local club Napoli, who were enjoying the most successful period of their history. The team which included Diego Maradona and Ciro Ferrara had just won the Scudetto. Cannavaro started out as a ball boy at the Stadio San Paolo and his progress was such that he became a member of the first team alongside some of his childhood idols.

Cannavaro's Serie A debut came on 7 March 1993, at Turin’s Stadio Delle Alpi against Juventus. Unfortunately, post-Maradona Napoli were in desperate need of funds and were soon forced to sell Cannavaro to Parma F.C..

At Parma, Cannavaro initially began to win plaudits from a wider audience and establish himself as an extremely talented defender. Together with his defensive partner Lilian Thuram and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, Gialloblu became renowned as the team with one of the best defences in Serie A. Under the guidance of coach Carlo Ancelotti, they helped the club to its best ever league finish in 1997, finishing second, a point behind the champions Juventus. In 1998-99, Parma won the UEFA Cup and Coppa Italia amongst other trophies.

In the summer of 2002, Cannavaro joined Internazionale for a fee of €32 million. After a two year stint at the Nerazzurri, he signed for Juventus. Here he re-joined his ex-Parma partners Lilian Thuram and Gigi Buffon, to reform one of the most successful defensive line-ups in Serie A, and enabling Cannavaro to win his first scudetto with Juventus in 2005 and a second the following season in 2006. Cannavaro won l'Oscar del Calcio 2005, the Football Oscar, for his exceptional debut season at the Turin giants.

After the 2006 World Cup, the Calciopoli trial verdicts relegated Juventus FC to Serie B and stripped the club of its 2004/2005 and 2005/2006 Scudetti. Cannavaro, mindful of his age and the imminent prospect of two years of the club not being able to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, decided to leave La Vecchia Signora. Cannavaro said that “Even if I know this may be hard to believe, I would have stayed at Juventus had they remained in Serie A – even with a 30-point deduction.”. He accompanied one of his team mates, Emerson and in doing so re-joined his former Juve coach Fabio Capello at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, the home of Real Madrid. Although no fee was confirmed by either club, press speculation has often set the combined transfer's worth at roughly 20 million euros.

On July 25, Fabio Cannavaro officially became a Real Madrid player, with a three year contract and the number 5 jersey, which previously belonged to Manuel Sanchís and Zinedine Zidane. He scored his first goal for the club on August 18, 2006 in a friendly match against Real Betis. On his 33rd birthday, Real Madrid played against Olympique Lyonnais in the Champion League losing 2-0; Cannavaro was at fault for both goals.

Fabio Cannavaro's first taste of international success came over a decade ago under coach Cesare Maldini with Italy's U-21 side, winning consecutive European Under-21 Football Championship titles in 1992-1994 and 1994-1996. In 1996, he participated in the Summer Olympics in Atlanta.

In the national team, Cannavaro and Alessandro Nesta have combined very effectively to form the basis of the Italian central defence. He has played for his country in the 1998, 2002, and 2006 World Cups, as well as Euro 2000 and Euro 2004. Cannavaro made his international debut in January 1997 against Northern Ireland and has since earned 102caps. Only Paolo Maldini (126 caps) and Dino Zoff (112 caps) have appeared in more games for Italy.

Cannavaro's first international tournament came at 1998 FIFA World Cup under his mentor Paolo Maldini, and the squad was coached by Maldini's father Cesare. Italy went out in the quarter-finals to hosts and eventual champions France; Cannavaro suffered a scar on his forehead from an elbow by Stephane Guivarc'h during the match. The match was decided by a penalty shoot-out after the teams were tied 0-0.

In Euro 2000, it was Les Bleus who once again shattered Italy's dreams. Cannavaro had a strong tournament and the Azzurri reached the final, where they led the then world champions 1-0 going into injury time. Near the end of regular time, Sylvain Wiltord found the equalizer, and an extra-time golden goal from David Trezeguet gave France the title.

At the 2002 FIFA World Cup he was credited with holding the defence together, almost single-handedly after Alessandro Nesta was injured against Croatia. Italy however went out amidst a refereeing controversy losing to co-hosts South Korea in the second round, again to a golden goal.

Cannavaro had a hard act to follow when he took over as captain from Maldini after the 2002 World Cup, but he quickly won the team over with his constant smile, laid-back Neapolitan approach and inspiring performances. After Maldini's international retirement he first captained Italy in a match at Napoli and received a standing ovation on the pitch where he sported the local side's colours between 1991 and 1995.

Euro 2004 which was hosted by Portugal turned out to be a disappointment. Cannavaro picked up yellow cards during the two draws with Denmark (0-0) and Sweden (1-1), forcing him to sit out the final group game. Italy defeated Bulgaria 2-1, but failed to advance on goal difference.

Cannavaro's only international goal was scored on May 30, 2004 against Tunisia, Italy won 4-0.

Cannavaro captained Italy throughout their 2006 World Cup campaign. Though forwards Alessandro Del Piero, Francesco Totti, and Christian Vieri had received the most attention in past international tournaments, Cannavaro was considered one of the top Italian players in Germany.

His performance against Germany in the World Cup Semi-Finals 2006 was earmarked as one of the finest individual performance ever seen in football by many pundits, including Eamon Dunphy.

He earned a spot on the All-Star Team at the end of the competition - awarded by FIFA's Technical Study Group - alongside six other Italian teammates, Gianluigi Buffon, Gennaro Gattuso, Andrea Pirlo, Luca Toni, Francesco Totti and Gianluca Zambrotta. After victories in the 2006 World Cup, the Azzurri celebrated to the soundtrack of traditional Italian songs on Cannavaro's iPod.

He was runner up in the race for the Golden Ball, finishing runner-up to French captain Zinedine Zidane. Those who voted for Cannavaro felt that he had played immaculately throughout the tournament, while Zidane only shone in the knockout phase of the competition; it was a close contest with Zidane polling 2012 points to Cannavaro's 1977. However, Zidane was arguably the most dominant player on his squad, compared to Cannavaro who faced competition from his teammates; notably Buffon who was named the tournament's best goalkeeper and outpolled Zidane and Cannavaro in Golden Ball Internet voting, and Pirlo who won the Bronze Ball.

His crowning moment was lifting the World Cup on July 9, 2006, the night of his 100th cap. Notably, Cannavaro never received a single yellow or red card throughout the 690 minutes he played in the tournament. The Italian defence conceded only two goals throughout the entire tournament, an own-goal and a penalty shot.

He is regarded as a sex symbol in his native Italy and was recently voted "sexiest player" of the 2006 World Cup. He is married to Daniela, who he met at the age of 18. They had a romantic courtship, as Fabio proclaimed his love for Daniela by writing her love notes on walls. They have two sons, Christian (b. July 17th 1999) and Andrea (b. October 20, 2004), and a daughter, Martina (b. December 22, 2001).

He idolizes Ciro Ferrara and Diego Maradona heroes of his native Naples. His first experience of the World Cup came at Italia '90, where the home team was playing Argentina in the semi-finals. Cannavaro is revered by fans of Italian football because of his character, his determination and his humility. He is nearly always photographed with his famous engaging smile. Together with his fellow Napoletano Ciro Ferrara, Fabio has helped establish a charity foundation, "FCF | Fondazione Cannavaro Ferrara", specialising in the procurement of cancer research equipment and surgery for special cases of cancer for a hospital in their native Naples.

He has many tattoos. On the inside of his upper right arm, is "Andrea" (one of his sons) and on the outside, a tattoo of a warrior. On his right forearm, is a tattoo saying "Daniela" (his wife) and on his upper back, is a tattoo with Chinese characters while on the lower back, is a tattoo of "Christian" (his other son). Also, on his right leg, he has a tattoo of a sun.

His younger brother, Paolo Cannavaro, is also a defender, and plays for Napoli. The two brothers played alongside each other at Parma from 2000 until 2002, when Fabio left for Inter. Cannavaro has expressed his desire to play for his native club Napoli after his stint at Real Madrid.

Antoine Rizkallah Kanaan Filho, commonly known as Tony Kanaan (born December 31, 1974 in Salvador, Brazil) is a Brazilian race car driver of Lebanese heritage. Kanaan won the 2004 Indy Racing League IndyCar Series championship driving Andretti Green Racing's 7-Eleven sponsored car, winning three times in his Honda-powered Dallara. That season he completed 3,305 laps, making him the first IndyCar Series driver to complete every possible lap in a season. He also led 889 laps in 13 separate races to establish an IndyCar Series record. Kanaan is also the only driver to lead the Indianapolis 500 in each of his first seven starts, though he has yet to win this flagship event. He has a total of 13 IRL race victories.

Kanaan was the 1997 Indy Lights champion, driving for Tasman. In 1999 he scored his first major victory in the Champ Car World Series by winning the U.S. 500 at Michigan International Speedway for Forsythe Championship Racing. After the Forsythe team lost their McDonald's sponsorship package, Kanaan moved on to Mo Nunn's start-up team for the next three years before moving on to the IRL.

Following his championship season, in 2005 he placed second in the championship to his teammate Dan Wheldon. That year, he won his first pole position for the Indianapolis 500 to add to his finishes of second, third, fifth and eighth in the event. Winning the Indianapolis 500 remains one of the few holes in his resume. In September 2005 he tested a Formula One car with the BAR-Honda Team at Jerez as a reward for his 2004 IRL championship in a Honda powered car.

Kanaan is good friend of Brazilian Formula One driver Rubens Barrichello, and they exchanged helmets for the events in May 28, 2006. Barrichello wore Kanaan's helmet livery during the Monaco GP and Kanaan wore Rubens's one during the Indy 500.

Another of Kanaan's long-time good friends and a former teammate from his Tasman days is Helio Castroneves. Kanaan and Castroneves have developed an intense rivalry that has resulted in some hard feelings. Castroneves accused Kanaan of costing him the 2006 IndyCar Series championship by racing him too hard for position in the final race. Kanaan countered that he was not paid to let other people pass him for position. The two started to patch up their differences at Indianapolis in 2007.

Kanaan had a fine 2007 season, winning a series-high five events by taking first place in Japan at Honda's Twin Ring Motegi track, the Milwaukee Mile, Michigan International Speedway, Kentucky Speedway, and the Detroit Grand Prix in Belle Isle. He also took the pole position at Kansas, although a pit-incident with team-mate Danica Patrick dropped him from a possible win. Later he took a second pole position at Kentucky. At the 2007 Indianapolis 500 he dominated the field and led at a rain delay just past the halfway point. A questionable call to pit right before the rain-shortened race ended gave the race to his teammate, Dario Franchitti, who did not appear to have Kanaan's speed. It was the latest in a string of disappointments at Indianapolis, and Kanaan is now often referred to -- along with his team owner Michael Andretti -- as one of the best drivers never to win the Indianapolis 500.[citation needed] Kanaan recorded his first win of 2008 in the SunTrust Indy Challenge at Richmond International Raceway.

Hélio Castroneves (born Hélio Castro Neves; May 10, 1975 in São Paulo, Brazil) is a Brazilian auto racing driver currently competing in the North American IndyCar Series. In IndyCar competition, Castroneves has 12 wins and 25 poles, and has championship point finishes ranging from second to sixth in a complete season of racing. Prior to IndyCar, Castroneves competed in Champ Car racing with a highest championship points finish of fourth.

Starting his career in karting, Castroneves later raced in the Paul Stewart Racing team, and finished third in the 1995 British Formula Three Championship.

Castroneves won the Indianapolis 500 in both 2001 and 2002, becoming the fifth driver to do so in consecutive years, and the first since Al Unser in 1971. He finished second to teammate and countryman Gil de Ferran in 2003. Castroneves has won two pole positions for the Indy 500, including one in 2007.

Aside from success in racing, Castroneves won the fifth season of the American reality TV show Dancing with the Stars with partner Julianne Hough. He currently resides in Miami, Florida.

Dakoda Flowie Dowd was born on April 3, 1993. She is also known as "Koda", is an American amateur golfer. On April 27, 2006, 24 days after her 13th birthday, she became the youngest player to compete in an LPGA tournament.

Dakoda, who lives in Palm Harbor, Florida, is a golf prodigy who has won more than 185 junior tournaments and is the top-ranked American golfer in her graduating class.

Dakoda's mother, Kelly Jo Dowd, was diagnosed with breast cancer in the fall of 2002. Kelly Jo underwent a double mastectomy and chemotherapy treatments. Doctors believed the cancer had gone into remission, but several years later, Kelly Jo was discovered to have metastatic cancer in her bones and liver. The Dowd family was devastated and Dakoda scaled back her golf activities in order to spend more time with her mother, who doctors said could have only months to live. The Dowds were forced to move into a studio apartment due to medical costs and the loss of Kelly Jo's income, despite fundraising efforts by Kelly Jo's former employer, Hooters. At times, Dakoda even considered quitting golf, but her father, Michael, and Kelly Jo encouraged her to keep playing.

In March of 2006, Dakoda received a sponsor's exemption to play in the inaugural LPGA Ginn Open after the CEO of Ginn Clubs & Resorts, Bobby Ginn, was made aware of a story in the The Tampa Tribune about Kelly Jo's plight and her dream to see her daughter play in an LPGA event. Dakoda's story attracted considerable media attention and she was followed by a large gallery during the tournament. She birdied the first hole she played and went on to finish the first round with a 2-over par score of 74. Although Dakoda ended up missing the cut, the experience was nevertheless described as "fantabulous" by Kelly Jo and "super surreal" by Dakoda.

Dakoda plans to attend the University of Georgia and aspires to become a full-time player on the LPGA Tour.

Deborah Renshaw-Parker (born October 28, 1975, in Bowling Green, Kentucky) is a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver. She currently does not have a ride.

Renshaw first participated in NASCAR when she began racing in the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series in 2001 and 2002. In those two seasons, she finished in the top 10 thirteen times and also set a qualifying record when she won the pole at Riverview Speedway. She also became the first woman to ever lead a NASCAR sanctioned series when the young woman shared the points lead with fellow driver Joe Buford after the second race of the 2002 season at Nashville Speedway USA. Later that summer, she gained the spotlight when some fellow drivers entered a car in a race for the sole purpose of finishing behind her so her car could be protested. She sat out the next two races but resumed the season and ended up finishing tenth in the race for the track championship.

According to the book Along For The Ride by Larry Woody (Chapter "Lap XIX: Women, Wendell and Willie"), "Day admitted early on that he was not convinced that women belonged on a race track" but that his problem was not with Renshaw because she was female, instead because she was a "Bad Driver." Woody noted that track promoter Dennis Glau had "gotten wind of the scheme prior to the race" and contacted NASCAR, who instructed him to disallow the protest. Her father Dan Renshaw, however, felt there was nothing to lose and allowed officials to search the engine. Unfortunately, a minor violation was found and her car was declared illegal. It should be noted that the protest was not only for Renshaw, but her male teammate Chevy White.

Renshaw would spend the 2003 season in the ARCA RE/MAX Series, where she finished in the top ten three times. However, during her tenure there, she was involved in an accident that claimed the life of fellow driver Eric Martin, another controversial event during her career. After Martin had originally spun out during a practice session in Charlotte, he was alive and talking to his crew over the radio. Three cars that approached Martin's car were unaware that he was there because their spotters were not in the stands, however they avoided Martin's car as it slowly rolled across the track and into the wall. A few moments after it came to rest Renshaw, also without a spotter, t-boned him at full speed, causing Martin's death. The incident prompted the mandation of spotters whenever their driver was on the track in Nascar and ARCA.

Renshaw ran in 14 of the last 15 races of the 2004 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season. She drove the #29 Ford F-150 for K Automotive Racing. Despite finishing no higher than 15th, she became the first woman to ever lead a race in the series when she led one lap in the Darlington 200. Renshaw joined Bobby Hamilton Racing's driver development program in December 2004. Replacing Chase Montgomery in the #8, Renshaw became the first woman to ever run a complete schedule in one of NASCAR's three premier series; she missed only one race in the 2005 Craftsman Truck Series season. She had two top-ten starts, the highest being 8th at Nashville Superspeedway in August, but she failed to garner a top-ten finish. Her final position in the points standings was 24th.

Afterwards, Renshaw's future with Bobby Hamilton Racing (BHR) was unknown. BHR was forced to search for a replacement for EasyCare, who pulled out as the primary sponsor. Furthermore, the team announced Bobby Hamilton Jr. was going to run a limited schedule in the truck for the 2006 season, with Montgomery returning for the first race at Daytona; no plans for Renshaw were announced. Finally, on February 1, 2006, The Tennessean reported the pullout by EasyCare cost Deborah her ride at Bobby Hamilton Racing, which may effectively end her racing career.
